A top handled chainsaw that will start in any weather, the MS 201 TC-M is ideal for arborists.
If you are looking for a professional chainsaw for all weather, the MS201 TC-M certainly ticks those boxes. This petrol chainsaw has a fully electronic engine management system which has an extreme amount of benefits for the user.
Firstly, the M-Tronic system manages ignition sequences and fuel metering in every single operating mode, so the user can start the machine without worry and it will keep constant power under load.
Secondly, sensors have a cold or warm start recognition, which will take into account the conditions of the environment such as outdoor temperature and air mass and adjust the fuel/air mixture accordingly. This means the user can start and operate the MS 201 TC-M in even the coldest environments, with maximum performance being delivered within a few seconds.
Lastly, M-Tronic ensures this Stihl chainsaw is easier to start than other models. Now there is just one start position on the combi-lever, just pull on the starting cord a few times and there is immediate acceleration to speed (in all weathers). With the help of ElastoStart compression shock is reduced, so the starting procedure is less demanding on the user’s arms and joints.
Additionally, when using the MS 201TC-M in similar conditions as before, the electronic system will keep the adjustments necessary to ensure optimal performance and the engine starts again.
A compact, robust chainsaw that’s easy to maintain.
Being a lightweight top handle petrol chainsaw, some would expect the MS 201 TC-M to be harder to maintain – but this certainly is not the case.
For example, the inbuilt compensator controls the carburettor preventing the fuel-air mixture getting richer as the air filter becomes clogged. The correct quantity of fuel is delivered to the carburettor depending on the quantity of air passing through the air filter. This keeps the fuel/air ratio in the combustion mixture constant and hence also the engine power. The filter doesn’t need to be cleaned until an appreciable drop in power occurs
Consequently, this makes the engine last longer, perform for longer without the need to replace the filter as often. And when the time comes to replace the filter cartridge, it’s quick and easy and can be done without tools.
Furthermore, the MS 201 TC-M has a petrol engine which is highly efficient and will reduce fuel consumption. This is achieved by the 2-mix engine and the advancements of the four overflow channels, which swirl the fuel-air mix before ignition, allowing for optimum combustion and highly efficient performance. The result is lower fuel consumption and high torque across a broad rpm range.
Advanced cutting power with less vibration
Whether you are using the 12″ or 14″ bar and chain, the Stihl MS 201 TC-M has a fantastic cutting performance. The .325″ pitch of the chain is designed to precise cut the timber at high speed without splinter the wood.
What’s more, when using the Ematic chain lubrication system, it ensures pinpoint lubrication of the saw chain links and guide bar rails. This will provide maximum lubrication, longer wear and less oil consumption than conventional methods of chain lubrication. The Ematic system can reduce bar oil consumption by up to 50%
When changing the cutting attachment, you will not risk losing the nuts on the sprocket. The MS 201 TC-M is the first Stihl chainsaw to be equipped with the captive nuts. A great advantage for all users. Additionally, the side tensioner removes the need to have contact with the sharp saws of the chain.
Finally, this pro chainsaw is equipped with an anti-vibration system, to reduce the vibration at the handles. Therefore, the user will benefit from less fatigue over prolonged use of the power tool.
Additional features
A scabbard snaps directly onto the sprocket so it’s firmly attached and safely fixed onto the chainsaw. It also has two suspension eyelets that allow the arborist to secure the scabbard to his harness with a rope. The special scabbard covers the clamp end stop. This is to prevent injury and material damage.
Also, fold-out hook serves as a carrying rope attachment for lowering the arborist saw and for security. When it is pushed in, the hook doesn’t get in the way of your work or when it’s in storage.

STIHL M-Tronic (M)
This fully electronic engine management system adjusts ignition timing and fuel metering in all operating modes. It also takes external conditions such as temperature, altitude and fuel quality into account. It ensures consistent engine performance, a constant maximum speed and superb acceleration. M-Tronic makes manual carburettor adjustments unnecessary. Thanks to electronic cold/warm start recognition, now there is only one start position on the combi-lever. The engine starts after fewer pulls and with no change of position, and can immediately accelerate up to speed – even after a cold start. M-Tronic also remembers the settings from the last time the tool was used. So when external conditions are the same, optimal engine performance is available every time you start up again.
Advanced combustion technology
Four overflow channels swirl the fuel-air mix before ignition, allowing for optimum combustion and highly efficient performance. The result is lower fuel consumption and high torque across a broad rpm range.
Scabbard
The scabbard snaps directly onto the sprocket so it’s firmly attached and safely fixed onto the chainsaw. It also has two suspension eyelets that allow the arborist to secure the scabbard to his harness with a rope. The special scabbard covers the clamp end stop. This is to prevent injury and material damage.
Anti-vibration system
Intense vibration at the handles of power tools can lead to long-term effects on blood vessels in the hands and arms. STIHL has therefore developed an effective anti-vibration system whereby the oscillations from the machine’s engine are dampened which significantly reduces vibrations at the handles.
Compensator
This controller in the carburettor prevents the fuel-air mixture getting richer as the air filter becomes clogged. The correct quantity of fuel is delivered to the carburettor depending on the quantity of air passing through the air filter. This keeps the fuel/air ratio in the combustion mixture constant and hence also the engine power. The filter doesn’t need to be cleaned until an appreciable drop in power occurs.
Captive nuts
When changing the cutting attachment, you will not risk losing the nuts on the sprocket. The MS 261 is the first STIHL chainsaw to be equipped with the captive nuts. A great advantage for all users.
Variable-displacement oil pump
Allows a precise, demand-based delivery of oil. It’s possible to reduce oil production by up to 50% in the E position. For very long cutting attachments or very dry wood, an additional volume of oil can be added by the user. similar to illustration.
Single-lever master control
All important functions such as start, choke, throttle and stop are operated via a single lever.
Side chain tensioner
The tensioning screw can be found on the side of the chain saw through the sprocket cover. This removes the need for contact with the sharp saw chain.
Ematic chain lubrication system
The Ematic chain lubrication system ensures pinpoint lubrication of the saw chain links and guide bar rails. When used with STIHL OILOMATIC saw chain, it will provide maximum lubrication, longer wear and less oil consumption than conventional methods of chain lubrication. The Ematic system can reduce bar oil consumption by up to 50%.
STIHL ElastoStart
STIHL ElastoStart reduces the shock caused by the compression of the engine during starting. The compression shock is taken away from the user’s joints and muscles through a spring or rubber element in the starter handle.
