Stihl RMI 422 – Compact robotic mower for lawns up to 800m²
The RMI 422 robot mower from Stihl is a compact machine that will comfortably mow small to medium-sized lawns with an area of up to approx. 800 m². Its design will ensure that this is completed in the most efficient way and in the shortest time possible. As the RMI 422 is fully automated so once the iMOW® is installed, it will mow, charge, and run its schedule all by itself. If the robot mower battery happens to run low or it starts raining, the RMI 422 will return itself to the docking station. Depending on what amount of lawn remains to be cut, it will then cleverly decide to either undertake a quick charge or opt to charge slowly to help conserve power. Your lawn cuttings will be finely shredded to be returned back into the soil, giving back vital nutrients due to a robust mulching blade fitted, eliminating the need to dispose of any grass cuttings. The iMOW® RMI 422 offers great cutting versatility with 15 cutting height settings to choose from, these vary from 20mm to 60mm which is plenty of scope for adjustment to suit you and your lawn. Stihl also offers a generous 5 year extended warranty which is subject to registration and annual servicing. For more information please contact your local iMOW® dealer. STIHL iMOW® robotic mowers comply with all applicable industry safety standards. However, the iMOW® robotic mower is not a toy. During the iMOW® robotic mower’s active times, children, bystanders, and animals must be kept out of the working area. Please refer to the operating instructions for further information. The Features We Like
- The Included Standard Equipment
- Movable Hood
- Bright & Clear Display
- Safety Protection
- Smart Docking Station
- Mulching Deck
- Intelligent Operation (drive home option, mowing schedule, terrain capability)
Standard Equipment
Standard equipment for the STIHL iMOW® robotic mower includes the machine, a docking station, 4x pegs for securing the docking station to the ground as well as an iMOW® ruler to help the laying the perimeter wire needed for the mower. An installation kit is also included to install the iMOW® robotic mower.
Movable Hood
The movable hood has inbuilt sensors that protect the STIHL RMI 422 iMOW® robotic mower from the weather and also obstacles. If the iMOW® robotic mower encounters an obstacle during its automatic mowing, the integrated sensors detect this contact with the object and change its direction.
Clear Bright LCD Display
A flush-mounted, high-contrast, LCD control panel is integrated into the STIHL RMI 422 housing. This offers a large clear display that is bright making it easy to read even in sunlight. It also provides a simple but intuitive way of recording all settings along with a way of viewing any of the functions and the performance data of the automatic lawnmower.
All-Round Protection
The STIHL iMOW® robotic mower is equipped with a number of various sensors for safety, for example, if someone attempts to lift up the mower while in operation, it will immediately stop mowing. In addition to this feature, the STIHL RMI 422 automatic lawnmower, can be protected with a PIN code and be configured so that it can only be operated by entering this PIN, protecting it from unauthorised use.
Smart Docking Station
Included as standard equipment, the docking station is both the robotic mower’s home and also where it charges its battery and is the starting point for every mowing operation. When driving, the automatic lawnmower is guided by the signal transmitted by the installed perimeter wire at the edge of your lawn. This signal is fed via the smart docking station and If it rains, or the battery runs down during mowing, the iMOW® robotic mower independently returns to the docking station to recharge its battery. Its intelligent charging system will then independently decide whether an express charge is necessary, due to the need for another mowing operation or whether the battery could be charged more gently in normal mode. The docking station can be placed within or outside the lawn area.
Mulching Mowing Deck
The mulching blade fitted is of a sturdy design and will ensure a precise cut pattern even if the grass has a slightly higher growth. The rotational direction changes automatically every time the blade stops meaning the blades of the automatic lawnmower wear evenly but can also be changed without the need for tools which is a great feature we think.
Offset Drive Home
By default, the iMOW® robotic mower travels back home to the docking station along the perimeter wire. If required, and depending on the condition of the edge of the mowing area, the iMOW® can also travel to its docking station with an alternating offset to the perimeter wire.
iMOW® Robotic Mower Drive
The STIHL iMOW® robotic mowers feature a drive that enables them to mow hilly terrain with consistently high quality. The RMI 422 can handle gradients of up to 35%, while the other automatic lawnmowers from the RMI 4 series can cope with a gradient of up to 40%.
Adaptive Slope Speed
An integrated tilt sensor constantly analyses the position of the automatic lawnmower and adapts its speed accordingly, and by using its adaptive slope speed function, the STIHL iMOW® robotic mower can function effortlessly on uneven terrain.
Dynamic Mowing Plan
Using the STIHL iMOW® robotic mower interactive mowing plan, individual time windows during which the machine can be in operation can be defined for each day. Within these active times, the automatic lawnmower automatically determines the best times to mow for an optimum result. If it has to interrupt mowing because of rain, it automatically catches up later within the specified time window. The dynamic mowing plan can be called up and amended via the control panel.
Wheels With Traction Pattern
The smooth-running wheels with traction pattern ensure that the STIHL iMOW® robotic mower moves with precision. Especially on hilly lawns with a slight gradient of up to 35% and denser grass growth. The treaded wheels of the automatic lawn mower are self-cleaning.
IMOW FAQ’s
How do I adjust the cutting height?
You can adjust the cutting height using the rotary knob on top of the iMOW® robotic mower. Select the desired cutting height with reference to the marking on the rotary knob.
- The minimum cutting height (setting 1) is 20 mm
- The maximum cutting height (setting 8) is 60 mm
What happens to the cuttings?
The iMOW® robotic mower is a mulching mower. During mulching, the grass clippings are further shredded in the mowing deck housing after cutting. They then fall back into the turf, where they remain and decompose. The finely shredded clippings return organic nutrients to the lawn, serving as a natural fertiliser. Fertiliser requirements are thereby reduced significantly.
Where are the ‘no go’ areas?
No-go areas are areas where the iMOW® robotic mower should not venture. No-go areas can include
- Ponds
- Swimming pools
- Flowerbeds
- Vegetable patches
These areas must be cordoned off by routing the perimeter wire accordingly
Can the RMI 422 Robotic Lawnmower mow lawn edges cleanly?
Soft edges (ground level patios, paths, etc.) are positioned inside the perimeter wire in such a way that the mower produces perfectly clean results. Around hard edges such as walls, raised patios, etc., the iMOW® robotic mower is installed in such a way that it travels as close to the edge as possible, but always safely.
How does the rain sensor work?
The rain sensor can be set so that mowing is interrupted or does not start when it is raining. The current value is displayed in a line diagram in the menu under “SMART” > “Weather” > “Rain sensor”. In order to set the 5-stage sensor, slide the control to the left or right. The rain sensor can also be set under “Settings” > “Rain sensor”. The sensitivity of the rain sensor and the time the robotic mower waits for the sensor surface to dry following rain varies, depending on the setting.
What happens when the battery on the IMOW is completely discharged?
The iMOW® robotic mower enters the docking station automatically at the end of the mowing operation or when the battery is low on energy. The number and duration of the mowing and charging operations within the active times are adapted fully automatically – Download PDF Manual Here (If Available)

Had mine for a few months now and what an amazing bit of equipment, takes a bit of work to set up initially but all fairly straightforward. Pretty much looks after our average-sized lawn and itself with no problem. Excellent service from mowers3go too.
